"I Have a Dream" Cloud Mobile

Directions: Draw 5 cloud shapes on the sheet of construction paper. Cut out each cloud. Have the students write dreams of his/her own on the back of each cloud. If possible, the child should also illustrate the dream as best as he can. Attach the cloud to the end of each piece of string with tape. Tie the other end to the base of the wire hanger. Hang the clothes hangers around the room and have the students share their dreams.

Rainbow Collage

Materials: Color construction paper in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, Safety scissors and pencil.

Directions: Divide these colors evenly between the classroom (ie for 24 students, four students will get the red paper, four students the orange, etc.). In case the class has more than four students, hand out red and orange to the extras. If your classroom has less than four students, provide less of the blue and purple. Each child should trace both his left and right hands on the paper. For younger students, they may need to be paired up so that the partner can do the tracing. Have the child cut out the traced hands and write his or her name on the back. Staple the hands to a bulletin board (or tape if on a wall) in the shape of an arced rainbow. The red hands should be at the top of the rainbow, the orange placed beneath and slightly overlapping the red, the yellow placed beneath and slighting overlapping the orange, and continuing so on with the green next, then the blue, and finishing up with the purple.

The hands put altogether will form a rainbow which is a very visual way of illustrating abstract concepts such as unity and equality. The important lesson here is that regardless of color, everyone is part of the same dream.
